Alberta's framework for the management of contaminated sites is designed to achieve three policy outcomes: pollution prevention, health protection, and productive use. Under this framework, three management options are provided: Tier 1, Tier 2, and Exposure Control. Under Tier 2 it may be possible to screen out certain exposure pathways and/or modify the Tier 1 guidelines on the basis of site conditions. This companion document describes how the Tier 2 approach might be used to develop remediation objectives for a site.

Provides direction and guidance related to oil sands mine reclamation and closure planning, and certification. The framework is a preliminary step in defining a structured process and information requirements for oil sands mine reclamation certification. As it stands now, the Framework is not complete and requires further development before implementation. The conditions of approvals issued to each oil sands mine operator under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act continue to provide direction for reclamation and closure planning. When completed, the Framework will support applications for reclamation certification, after which the land can be returned to the Crown.

This document presents suggested procedures and criteria to carry out an assessment on reclaimed borrow excavations and their associated haul roads (borrow sites).

This guide explains steps to follow when carrying out a pre-disturbance assessment. The pre-disturbance assessment serves two purposes: to establish the pre-disturbance land capability of the site; and to provide guidance to operators to direct soil salvage.

Drilling waste disposal has been regulated in Alberta since 1975. Oil and gas operators are required to show compliance with government standards by submitting disposal information for drilling waste that was disposed of on a wellsite or at a remote sump or land treatment site. This document was developed by representatives from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, drilling waste disposal consultants, the Energy Resources Conservation Board, and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development to provide guidance for assessing drilling waste disposal areas for reclamation.
