Outlines the knowledge, skills, behaviours, and attitudes required by all health care aides (HCAs) who deliver care in Alberta. The purpose of profile is to: outline core competencies for HCAs; provide the foundation upon which to build the provincial HCA curriculum; provide guidelines for developing competency assessment tools and methods; provide reference for developing HCA job descriptions; and act as a resource to assist HCAs, the public, employers, and other health care team members to understand HCA core competencies.

The occupational committee develops the standards for certification as set out in this Occupation Competency Profile. A person training to be a steel detailer should register with the Alberta Chapter of the National Institute for Steel Detailing (NISD). A person who has completed the competency requirements and met industry standards for any level of the Steel Detailer training program to the satisfaction of the Alberta Chapter of NISD can apply for certification at any Client Services office of Alberta Advanced Education, Apprenticeship and Industry Training. An NISD approved candidate will have to successfully pass an industry examination administered by Alberta Advanced Education before obtaining certification.

Description

Apprenticeship is post-secondary education with a difference. Apprenticeship begins with finding an employer. Employers hire apprentices, pay their wages and provide on-the-job training and work experience. Approximately 80 per cent of an apprentice’s time is spent on the job under the supervision of a certified journeyperson or qualified tradesperson. The other 20 per cent involves technical training provided at, or through, a post-secondary institution – usually a college or technical institute. To become certified journeypersons, apprentices must learn theory and skills, and they must pass examinations. Requirements for certification including the content and delivery of technical training—are developed and updated by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board on the recommendation of Communication Technician Provincial Apprenticeship Committee.
