The release presents data on two broad themes: Immigration and Ethnocultural Diversity and Aboriginal Peoples in Canada. This report presents a general overview of this new information, focusing on Alberta. A series of three analytical articles will follow over the next month, providing a more in‑depth examination of the NHS data released on May 8, 2013.

Between 2004 and 2006, Alberta’s economy expanded at an exceptionally rapid pace, attracting a record number of people to the province. The surge in oil sands investment and rapid growth in the Fort McMurray area helped create a perception that Fort McMurray was the main destination for migrants to Alberta. However, a detailed examination of migration trends reveals a more complex picture. This issue in the Demographic Spotlight series looks at migration flows over the past decade for three key Alberta census divisions: Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray), Calgary and Edmonton. It finds that from 2000 to 2010, 80 per cent of migrants to Alberta settled in Calgary and Edmonton, while only four per cent of the total net migration settled in Wood Buffalo.

Non-permanent residents are comprised of non-Canadians who have claimed refugee status or who hold a work or study permit, and the dependents who reside with them. Alberta has experienced a large inflow of net non-permanent residents in 2008 when compared to previous years. Higher numbers of foreign workers, in response to labor shortages, contributed to this increase. This issue in the Demographic Spotlight series looks at characteristics of non-permanent residents coming to Alberta, including their country of origin and destination, and economic sector of employment.
