This protocol is effective January 1, 2023 and must be used to quantify emission offsets generated in the 2023 vintage going forward. This quantification protocol is written for the oil and gas industry where natural gas is used to provide pneumatic power for automated process control and operational devices. Devices include pressure controllers, temperature controllers, transducers, liquid level controllers, flow rate regulators and chemical pumps. The opportunity for generating emission offsets arises from the direct and indirect reduction in greenhouse gases resulting from the conversion of instrument gas to instrument air in process control systems, conversion of pumps, and vent gas capture.

Description

This protocol serves as a generic ‘recipe’ for project proponents to follow in order to meet the measurement, monitoring, and greenhouse gas quantification requirements for reductions resulting from conversion of instrument gas to instrument air in process control systems. A process flow diagram for a typical project using compressed air to provide pressure to instrument controllers. Upon conversion, all methane that would have been vented will be replaced by compressed air.

Description

This protocol is applicable to projects that involve the capture and destruction of methane produced from anaerobic wastewater treatment processes and take actions to prevent the venting of biogas to the atmosphere. These systems could be installed as retrofits or modifications to existing wastewater treatment operations or implemented at new Greenfield facilities as the best available control technology. The feedstock to the anaerobic digestion system may be untreated industrial wastewater or sludge produced from other wastewater treatment processes at the project site.
