This quantification protocol is written for the oil and gas industry where natural gas is used to provide pneumatic power for automated process control and operational devices. Devices that may be powered by natural gas include pressure controllers, temperature controllers, transducers, liquid level controllers, flow rate regulators and chemical pumps. The opportunity for generating carbon offsets arises from the direct and indirect reduction in greenhouse gases resulting from the conversion of instrument gas to instrument air in process control systems.

This spreadsheet provides a summary of 2015-2017 data reported by facilities subject to the Specified Gas Emitters Regulation. The Regulation was passed in 2007 and expired December 31, 2017. Emissions were reported in units of tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents. Each facility was required to reduce its annual emissions intensity by a prescribed percentage target relative to its facility-specific approved baseline emissions intensity.

Reductions in greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved through optimally-operated aerobic composting. This quantification protocol sets the parameters for offset projects involving aerobic composting. For the purposes of this protocol, the baseline condition for eligible waste streams is set as anaerobic decomposition in a managed landfill in Alberta. The project condition is a demonstrated diversion of waste from the baseline case of landfilling to an eligible aerobic composting project.
