Description

The guidelines presented here for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections in Alberta have been adapted from the Canadian Guidelines on Sexually Transmitted Infections for provincial use with permission from the Public Health Agency of Canada. It includes the level of recommendation and quality of evidence indicators for the treatment recommendations. The indicators reflect a combination of the methodologies from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care and have been modified and simplified for use.

Topics covered include: a case definition of the disease; information on reporting requirements; disease etiology; clinical presentation; diagnosis; epidemiology; key investigation; case management and treatment; and preventive measures. The guidelines were developed by Alberta Health with input and advice from medical officers of health, public health nurses, public health inspectors and medical infectious disease specialists.

This report contains data on selected blood-borne pathogen and sexually transmitted infections in Alberta. Measures are based on newly diagnosed cases of infection per year, up to 2006. Reported rates are age-adjusted according to 1996 Census Canada data. For each infection, background information is provided on the effects of the infection, modes of transmission, available treatments, and international and Canadian data on infection rates. The analyses of Alberta data examine time trends, age groups, geographic areas, ethnicities, First Nations status, exposure categories, deaths, and prenatal screening, as available or appropriate for each pathogen.
