This report provides a summary of key research findings and recommendations resulting from a survey of Albertans on the topic of elder abuse. The survey administered a questionnaire to 1,603 Albertans aged 18 years and older, with an oversample of seniors, between March 14 and 29, 2018.

The Victims of Family Violence New Construction and Renovation Program is provided under the Federal Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing and is intended to address priority capacity issues and the need for additional shelter and transition housing spaces to ensure that families fleeing violence have a safe, secure and healthy environment. Cosmetic renovations are not eligible for funding under this program.

The Ministry of Human Services agrees with all six of the recommendations. The Ministry has a variety of activities and work underway which can be built upon to achieve these outcomes suggested in the recommendations.

This environmental scan was conducted to provide information from Canadian and international sources on best and promising practices in the areas of family violence training for child intervention personnel. The scan was conducted as part of a collaborative research project conducted by Calgary Counselling Centre researchers in partnership with Alberta Human Services and The Alberta Centre for Child, Family and Community Research. Results of the scan will be used to inform the development of a framework for advanced family violence training for child intervention staff in Alberta.

This literature review examines Canadian incident rates for domestic violence in child welfare cases, the co-occurrence of exposure to domestic violence and other forms of child maltreatment, current risk assessment tools, and safety planning practices used with families in which domestic violence is a concern. Family violence training programs for child intervention staff are reviewed and the best and promising practices are identified.
