The objectives of the 2014 investigation and monitoring program were to: Evaluate the potential for vapour migration in residences in the area; Assess exposure and risk to residents in the vicinity through direct measurement of indoor air; Investigate the effects of seasonality on potential vapour intrusion, soil vapour concentrations and presents of NAPL; Evaluate if attenuation and if possible biodegradation is occurring between the source and residents; and where possible, delineate the extent of NAPL in the vicinity of monitoring well MW10-6 and further characterize soil and groundwater conditions in this area.

Alberta has developed or adopted objectives from other jurisdictions where there are no national objectives or Canada Wide Standards. Air quality objectives are generally established for one-hour, 24-hour, and annual averaging periods. Occasionally, the underlying information or ambient monitoring method requires that other averaging periods be used. For example, a three-day objective was set for ethylene as experimental evidence indicated that this was a more appropriate averaging period than 24-hours.

Description

Ambient air quality objectives are established as part of the Alberta air quality management system. The purpose of this assessment report was to provide a review of scientific and technical information to assist in evaluating the basis and background for an ambient air quality objective for benzene. Benzene is a clear, colourless, volatile, highly flammable liquid with a sweet aromatic odour. It is primarily derived from petroleum and used in the manufacturing of chemical intermediates and as an additive in gasoline.
