Public update on the second phase of the Bow River Reservoir Options project. In the first phase, the Alberta government completed a conceptual assessment of water storage options along the Bow River upstream of Calgary. The second phase involves assessing three proposed water storage options to determine the most feasible option.

Phase 2: Feasibility Study Round 1 engagement took place between May 2021 and March 2023, with most of the engagement occurring between May and December 2021. Indigenous, stakeholder and public engagement are key components of the feasibility study. Engagement is being conducted in two rounds, and the final report will be shared when available at the end of the feasibility study. The focus of Round 1 was to introduce the feasibility study and share ideas on what should be considered when evaluating the three reservoir options.

This set of information sheets outlines the purpose of the Bow River Reservoir Options (BRRO) feasibility study (which comprises Phase 2 of the BRRO initiative), and explains the various activities that will be conducted as part of the feasibility study, including: environmental fieldwork; drone, bathymetric and topographical surveys; geophysical surveys; and geotechnical drilling and geological field mapping.

A May 2017 report by the Bow River Working Group provided advice on new reservoir storage on the Bow River upstream of Calgary to reduce flood and drought risk, and identified three reservoir options that warranted further study. From November 2018 to spring 2020, the Alberta government completed a conceptual assessment of the 3 water storage options. This package contains the conceptual assessment’s final report and its appendices.

Description

A May 2017 report from the Bow River Working Group provided advice on new reservoir storage on the Bow River upstream of Calgary to reduce flood and drought risk, and identified three reservoir options that warranted further study. In November 2018, Environment and Parks commissioned the development of conceptual engineering designs for the three options. This package contains a brochure and materials used at public information sessions held in September and October 2019 to discuss progress on the conceptual assessments for the three options, and next steps.
