Description

This bulletin is issued to inform practitioners of the department's revised guidelines on the centerline to centerline spacing for new rural divided highway cross section. Where land is considered to be of lower value (not suitable for cultivation or grazing) the use of a wider median (55m or more is desirable) has many economic advantages resulting from capital, maintenance and operational savings. Where the desirable spacing is not economical, a minimum centerline to centerline spacing of 40 m is acceptable.

Description

This Bulletin is issued to provide guidance to planners and designers regarding the spacing, placement, signing and geometric details of median crossovers on rural divided highways in Alberta. There is a need to consider roadside safety, highway operations, access management, access by emergency and law enforcement vehicles and cost when designing median crossovers on divided highways. Between interchanges and/or at-grade intersections, emergency crossovers should normally be spaced at between 5 and 6.5 km intervals. Exceptions may be made where necessary for access however these additional crossovers should be considered temporary and subject to removal when alternate access is provided.

This Design Bulletin is being issued as an amendment to Chapter B.5.3.1 – Climbing Lane Warrants for Two Lane Undivided Highways and Chapter B.5.3.2 – Climbing Lane Warrants for Four Lane Divided Highways of the Alberta Transportation Highway Geometric Design Guide 1995, Updated 1999. The revisions are needed due to changes in vehicle performance, average running speeds and due to a need to make all geometric improvements cost-effective.

Description

Over a number of years the department has developed some practices to address the need for thicker pavement structures and wider shoulders on the right hand side (looking in the direction of travel) on divided highways. These practices improve cost-effectiveness by allowing thinner pavements to be placed on the left lane of the twinned highway and/or deferring the need for grade-widening by allowing the right shoulder width to be increased through reduction of the left shoulder width. Both of these practices are achieved by shifting the physical crown line and/or allowing the painted centreline to be offset from the physical crown line.
