This data set reflects child care programs in Alberta licensed under the Child Care Licensing Act (prior to February 2021) and under the Early Learning and Child Care Act (February 2021 and after).   Data prior to February 2021 included reflects child care programs in Alberta licensed under the Child Care Licensing Act. Program types under the Child Care Licensing Act included day care programs, out-of-school care programs, preschool programs, group family child care, family day homes (approved by a licensed family day home agency), and innovative child care programs.   In February 2021, child care licensing changed from program-based to facility-based under the Early Learning and Child Care Act. There are now four types of licenses: facility-based programs, group family child care programs, family day homes (approved by a licensed family day home agency), and innovative child care programs. Certification is the process used by Alberta Children’s Services to review educational training and competencies to determine eligibility and issue certification towards provincial certification in accordance with the Alberta Early Learning and Child Care Act. Working in licensed child care programs is a regulated occupation. Individuals who work in licensed facility-based and home-based child care programs must hold provincial certification issued by the Alberta Government. The educational requirements for certification as well as the process of applying to be certified are contained in this guide.

This guidance builds upon the Alberta Health Services Health and Safety Childcare Guidelines, which all child care operators are required to follow. All re-opened licensed child care centres will also be required to be in compliance with applicable zoning and health and safety legislation, including the Child Care Licensing Act and Child Care Licensing Regulation. In the event of a conflict between this document and the AHS Health and Safety Childcare Guidelines, this document will prevail. Also available in French, see related tab.

Record of decision of the Chief Medical Officer of Health prohibiting attendance at early childhood service programs, day cares, out of school care, preschool programs, schools, post-secondary institutions and other educational settings in Alberta, for the purpose of lessening the impact of the public health emergency caused by the prevalence of COVID-19 in Alberta. This order was amended by Order 04-2020 on March 20, 2020, allowing essential workers to have access to child care services operating under specific terms and conditions. NOTE: Effective June 12, 2020, this order was rescinded by CMOH Order 25-2020 (see Related tab).
