Between 2003 and 2013 Alberta’s international merchandise exports rose 82% to $103.7 billion. By comparison, exports from the rest of Canada rose only 14% over the same period. Although higher prices and volumes of crude oil exports were the main driver of Alberta’s export growth, the manufacturing and agricultural sectors also made sizeable contributions to overall export growth.

International exports of Alberta oil and gas rose 9.9% in 2013, mainly as a result of higher natural gas prices and surging oil export volumes, especially from the oil sands. Crude oil by rail exports have surged in recent years and accounted for 5.2% of total oil export volumes in 2013.

Surging crude oil exports provided a large boost to exports and to economic growth in 2011 and oil exports are again growing rapidly in 2012. Strong growth in oil volumes is mainly the result of very strong growth in oil sands production, and to a lesser degree because of a small recovery in conventional oil production.
