Description

Under the Historical Resources Act, Alberta Arts, Culture and Status of Women regulates development activities that could adversely affect significant historic resources in the province. Indigenous traditional use sites are one of the types of historic resources that the ministry records and protects through its regulatory operations. This information bulletin explains how the ministry works with Indigenous communities to gather information on traditional use sites, and how these sites are integrated into the Listing of Historic Resources in such a way as to protect them during proposed developments while also protecting the confidential nature of the sites.

Under The Government of Alberta’s Policy on Consultation with First Nations on Land and Resource Management, 2013 Alberta has created the Aboriginal Consultation Office (ACO). The ACO oversees Alberta’s role in consultation. Requirements for consultation under the Historical Resources Act (HRA) will still be managed by Alberta Culture and Status of Women. Proponents and agents may need to contact Alberta Culture and Status of Women as part of the approval processes required by the Government of Alberta prior to the onset of development activities. Alberta Culture and Status of Women is the regulatory authority for traditional use sites that are considered historic resources under the HRA.

In 2017 the Government of Alberta began a review of its Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) system. This includes a review of Alberta’s enforcement and prevention activities as well as the OHS Act. This discussion paper provides a brief overview of the purpose of the review and the current state of the OHS system. It then outlines three broad topics which the review will focus on: responsibility, worker engagement, and prevention. Items for consideration are included for each of these topics. The discussion paper ends with information on how to become involved in the review.

This project will also provide opportunities to address the diversity of uses in this area through stakeholder engagement to ensure facilities meet user needs effectively. This plan has been created to represent the ultimate build-out of this area. Alberta Parks recognizes that given ecological sensitivities and social carrying capacity, future facility development beyond this plan is not recommended. Comments will be collected on all aspects of this plan.

This will help the Consultation Team identify solutions that foster safety in the community and affirm the rights of persons with developmental disabilities to live with dignity and opportunity in the community while recognizing and respecting their need for safe, healthy and supported lives.
