Description

Coal is a brown to black combustible material made from decayed plant matter that has been compressed by rock formations over a long period of time. It is found throughout the world and is the most abundant of the fossil fuels. Coal is classified by its type, grade and rank. The type of coal depends on the plant materials the coal is made from, grade is the purity of the coal and rank relates to the geological age of the coal.

Coalbed gas (CBG) effectively consists of methane with minor amounts of ethane and propane, but no hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Recognition of CBG as an increasingly important energy resource has led to rapid expansion of exploration activity. Rapid development started in the 1980s in the western United States of America (USA), and has spread over the last six years to the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). Increased production activities have brought increased awareness of environmental issues surrounding CBG development. In particular, reports of negative experiences associated with early CBG development in the USA have raised stakeholder concerns in Canada. Alberta CBG development has largely avoided the water resources issues experienced in the USA from CBG exploitation for two reasons. This is the revised standard operating procedures for the field protocols to be used to collect gas, water and bacteria samples for baseline water well testing. The objective of baseline water well testing is to produce representative gas, water and bacteria samples of the water contributing zone or zones that a give well is screened across. The data collected will serve as a baseline for future testing if there is a concern of an impact on the water well by coal-bed methane activity.
