Description

This wildlife status report looks at the woodland caribou. The woodland subspecies of the caribou is distributed across the forested and mountainous regions of Canada, including northern and west-central Alberta. The woodland caribou is included on the list of species that may be at risk in Alberta. This report summarizes past and ongoing research on woodland caribou ecology in Alberta as a step in updating its status designation. The report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

The woodland caribou species is listed as Threatened in Alberta. The goal of this recovery plan is to achieve self-sustaining woodland caribou herds and maintain the distribution of caribou in Alberta, and to ensure the long-term habitat requirements for woodland caribou are met with Alberta's caribou ranges. The plan provides background information on the woodland caribou, describes the threats facing the species, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and restore the species.

Description

The Caribou Range Recovery (CRR) project aims to speed the recovery of human disturbances, so that their negative effects on woodland caribou, and other sensitive wildlife species, are lessened and eventually eliminated. After substantial planning, three caribou areas with significant human development were chosen: Little Smoky, Stony Mountain and Red Earth. Local planning teams were set up for each area and general areas for restoration work were chosen. Pre-treatment information was collected for all restored areas. The project will be expanded in 2002/03, to cover additional project areas in the Rocky Mountain foothills and further study the effectiveness of different restoration techniques.

Description

Woodland caribou habitat mapping in northern Alberta is incomplete and imprecise, as habitat relationships are not fully understood, and land cover mapping is neither consistent nor complete. This report examines the results of a methodology that integrates Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper imagery in the northeast boreal region and a dataset containing nearly 100,000 caribou locations acquired from global positioning system radio-collars for thirty-six individuals in order to identify the areas of potential use by caribou. The results demonstrate how remote sensing, geographic information systems techniques, and ecological information can produce the kinds of information necessary for sustainable land management.
