Description

Reports on a cyclic solvent process (CSP) experimental pilot project at Cold Lake in the Clearwater formation. CSP is a non-thermal, in-situ bitumen recovery process that utilizes injected solvent to reduce the viscosity of the bitumen, enabling its production from wells drilled for that purpose. The liquid-phase solvent is injected into a horizontal well cyclically and, because of the large mobility contrast between the solvent and the bitumen, it fingers into the bitumen. Following injection, the solvent-bitumen blend is produced from the same well. Cyclic injection and production operations continue for multiple cycles over several years until the bitumen produced no longer justifies the cost of the solvent or until the bitumen production rate is no longer economic.

The Project consists of an oil sand mine and associated activities as an extension of the Base Plant operation near Fort McMurray, Alberta. The Project includes an open pit mining operation supplying oil sands to new bitumen froth production facilities (primary extraction). Bitumen froth would be delivered by pipeline to Base Plant for further processing, including secondary extraction and upgrading into various product blends for market. Further integration between the Project and Base Plant includes utilities and water systems. There would be external and in-pit tailings areas on the Project footprint. These facilities would be constructed with a combination of overburden and coarse tailings deposits. These areas, which provide off-stream storage of water that is recycled, would be the final location for coarse tailings deposits and treated fluid tailings deposits. The...

Value Creation Inc. owns Oil Sands Conservation Act Scheme Approval No. 10330B and Environmental Protection & Enhancement Act (EPEA) Approval No. 203303-01-01 covering diluted bitumen upgrading/specialty refining capacity up to 29,890 m3/day (188,000 barrels per day) and EPEA Approval No. 387876-00-00 for a Tank Farm serving early phase. The VCS-Heartland Complex Expansion would increase the capacity of the Project in total of up to ~119,240 m3/day (~750,000 barrels per day). Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed Suncor Energy Inc. Lewis project. The proposal is for in situ extraction with an estimated total bitumen production of 160,000 bpd and an operational life of up to 40 years. The project would be developed in four phases, supported by cogeneration of electricity to be constructed within the first two phases. Project components include gas fired steam generation including some cogeneration, water treatment and recycling, bitumen treatment, multi-well production pads, steam delivery pipelines, product recovery pipelines, local access roads, and borrow pits.
