Description

This monitoring plan was designed to address three objectives. First, to make a preliminary assessment of the status of all potential harlequin duck breeding streams in the bow Region of Kananaskis Country, and describe methods to continue this assessment with field work over a number of years. Second, to describe and assess the methods used to determine the population status of the ducks on the Elbow and Kananskis rivers; to assess the effectiveness of helicopter surveys used in central Alberta; and to recommend which methods to use to continue to estimate population size. Third, to describe and assess methods used to determine productivity of harlequin ducks on the Elbow and Kananskis rivers, and their validity for other streams.

Description

Since 1970 national surveys of the peregrine falcon population have been conducted every five years. Alberta has committed to surveying peregrines on a provincial basis as a component of the national survey. In 2000, Alberta was surveyed comprehensively as part of the 2000 national survey. This report presents the findings of the 2000 survey. Provincially, 48 territorial pairs were located: 23 in the southern Alberta population and 25 pairs in the northern population.

This wildlife status report looks at the bay-breasted warbler, a migrant songbird that breeds across the boreal forests of Canada and the northeastern United States and winters in Panama and northern South America. It is uncommon in most areas of Alberta and may be at risk in the province due to habitat loss. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Description

Wildlife management agencies need current knowledge on colony locations, status and trends of colonial nesting waterbirds to assist them in making decisions about protection through population and land use management. This survey was conducted to obtain data on location and status of colonial waterbirds in the Northwest Boreal Region in recognition of their sensitivity and public concern. The survey results have been provided to Natural Resources Service wildlife biologists and entered into the Biodiversity/Species Observation Database so that appropriate management strategies can be implemented. Crown lands that contain waterbird colonies will be recommended for protection from disturbances through the application of appropriate protective notations (PNTs) or seasonal sanctuaries.

In 1996 harlequin ducks were added to the Yellow "A" list of endangered and threatened species in Alberta. Since 1995, research in Kananaskis Country has contributed significantly to an understanding of the habitat and conservation needs of harlequin ducks in the province. The objectives of the 2000 field season, the results of which are reported in this document, included investigating the abundance, population structure, survival rates, trends and productivity of harlequin ducks on the Elbow and Kananaskis rivers; continuing baseline work on the Sheep and Highwood rivers, and Cataract Creek; and to make recommendations regarding harlequin duck conservation.

This wildlife status report looks at the willow flycatcher, which ranges along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains from the Bow valley south to Waterton Lakes National Park. This species, as its name suggests, prefers willow bushes and other shrubby habitats. In Alberta, it is associated with dry, upland, shrub-dominated sites. Distribution and abundance of the species in Alberta is relatively unknown, and therefore its status has been ranked as Undetermined. Aerial surveys for harlequin ducks were conducted in the spring of 1998-2000 in the McLeod and Cardinal River watersheds, and in 10 watersheds in the Willmore Wilderness Park. Ground and aerial surveys of broods occurred in August and September 2000, respectively along the Sulphur and Berland Rivers. The objectives of the surveys were to assess the utility of aerial surveys in censusing harlequin duck populations, and to determine presence, relative abundance, population trends, distribution, and productivity of harlequin ducks in selected watersheds. The results indicate that aerial surveys can be an effective method of censusing harlequin ducks when lighting conditions are favourable.

The Alberta greater sage-grouse population has declined significantly over the last thirty years prior to 2000. Previous research suggested that the population has declined as a result of poor recruitment. Low levels of recruitment appear to be linked to poor chick survival. Due to the inaccuracies of brood flushing counts, and the limits of technology to produce transmitters small enough for chicks, it has been difficult to accurately assess and understand chick survival. A count of grouse in 2000 indicates that, contrary to modelling, the population remained relatively stable. While sample sizes were small, measures of productivity in 2000 were quite low compared to previous years, suggesting a better understanding of the variability in the parameters in the model is needed. A 2-stage pilot experiment, focusing on attaching transmitters to sage-grouse chicks, was also conducted. In 1996 harlequin ducks were added to the Yellow "A" list of endangered and threatened species in Alberta. This document reports on the results of aerial surveys by helicopters to evaluate harlequin ducks populations in the Oldman River basin and to supplement previous instream foot surveys from 1997-2000. Data suggests a staging area for harlequin ducks occurs on the Oldman/Livingstone rivers, which suggests the Oldman River is an important harlequin duck stream in SW Alberta. The Castle River system appears to have few breeding harlequin ducks, but it is not known whether this has always been the case and it is important to investigate if the population is declining, stable or increasing. Continued monitoring of the two drainage systems are recommended. Management recommendations include conducting aerial and foot surveys as well as radio telemetry to identify important sections of stream and habitat used by harlequin ducks for nesting and brood rearing.
