White-nose syndrome is a devastating fungal disease that has killed unprecedented numbers of hibernating bats in eastern North America. As of January 2016, white-nose syndrome has spread to 26 states and five Canadian provinces. This document presents recommendations intended to reduce the potential for humans to disturb hibernating bats or inadvertently transport the fungus which causes the diseases to uncontaminated bat habitats.

This report briefly summarizes the current status of WNS, the risks, and the recommended responses.

High rates of bat mortalities are concerning as bats are relative long-lived with low reproductive output rates, and the majority of bats killed by turbines tend to be reproductive adults.
