Description

This wildlife status report looks at the Arctic grayling, a cold-water species of fish found in boreal and foothills streams in the Athabasca, Peace and Hay river drainages. The Arctic grayling is currently considered a Species of Special Concern in Alberta. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

This wildlife status report looks at the pygmy whitefish, a small, slim whitefish in Alberta that has been collected in specific habitats from only two locations in the province: Upper Waterton Lake and a restricted portion of the upper Athabasca River. Recent surveys indicate that it appears to be relatively common in Upper Waterton Lake and relatively uncommon in the Athabasca River. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Rocky Mountain sculpin, a bottom-dwelling fish found in Alberta only in the Milk River basin and upper St. Mary River basin of southern Alberta, is listed as Threatened in Alberta. The goal of this recovery plan is to protect and maintain self-sustaining populations of the Rocky Mountain sculpin within its current rage in the St. Mary and Milk rivers. The plan provides background information on the Rocky Mountain sculpin, describes the threats facing the species, outlines proposed strategies to address these threats, and presents an action plan that lists priority actions required to maintain and restore the species.

Description

This wildlife status report looks at the westslope cutthroat trout, a polytypic species of trout endemic to western North America. Populations in Alberta and British Columbia exist on the northern periphery of the species' range. Although historically a widespread species, westslope cutthroat trout has shown dramatic global declines in the number and distribution of populations due to habitat degradation, overharvesting and the introduction of nonnative species. The Alberta population of westslope cutthroat trout has a national designation of Threatened. Description

The shortjaw cisco is considered Threatened in Canada and has been approved for listing in Threatened in Alberta. To date, it has been verified at only one locality - Barrow Lake in the Canadian Shield region north of Lake Athabasca - although unconfirmed reports have also come from Lake Athabasca, Gregoire Lake, and Cold lake. The main objective of the work undertaken in 2001 was to search for other populations in the province. Additional distribution data would assist in assessing the status of this species by providing updated distribution data, a search effort context in which to evaluate the number of reported element occurrences, and a baseline for evaluation of future distribution trends.

Description

Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) initiated studies in to assess the distribution and relative abundance of species at risk throughout Alberta. Within the St. Mary and Milk river drainages, three fish species have been identified that are potentially at risk including St. Mary sculpin, western silvery minnow, and the stonecat. Although not listed as species at risk, SRD was also interested in the status of the brassy minnow and sauger. The area under study in this report included the mainstem of the Milk, North Milk, and St. Mary rivers, and Lee Creek, a major tributary to the St. Mary River. The field programs were conducted during summer and fall 2000 and 2001. Overall, 16 fish species were encountered in the Milk and St. Mary drainages during the present study. Of the five species of interest, all were encountered in the Milk River. Only the St. Mary sculpin was recorded in the St. Mary River and Lee Creek.
