The Southern Headwaters at Risk Project, or SHARP, is a multi-species approach to the management and conservation of species at risk in the headwater region of the Oldman River in Southwestern Alberta. This publication, part of a five-volume set which provides in-depth information about the project, outlines the landscape management unit selection process and provides management recommendations to apply at the landscape level and at the management unit level.

The Southern Headwaters at Risk Project, or SHARP, is a multi-species approach to the management and conservation of species at risk in the headwater region of the Oldman River in Southwestern Alberta. This publication, part of a five-volume set which provides in-depth information about the project, describes selected wide-ranging species found within the project area and outlines the landscape pressures pertinent to each, discusses some of the current initiatives that have been undertaken to minimize human pressures on their habitats and populations, and offers some recommendations for continued and further mitigation measures.

The western painted turtle is listed as Sensitive in Alberta and its distribution in the province is patchy. There are anecdotal records of western painted turtle in the Crowsnest Pass portion of the Southern Headwaters At Risk Project (SHARP), but the extent of the turtles' distribution has not been formally surveyed. Further, the origins of western painted turtle in the SHARP are uncertain. One of the primary objectives of the 2003-2004 SHARP amphibian and western painted turtle survey was to investigate the distribution and origins of the western painted turtle in the SHARP area. Western painted turtle surveys were completed at seven locations in the Crowsnest Pass area and turtles were identified at one site.

Description

Gillett's Checkerspot is a colourful and distinctive butterfly that has a very small global range and a global conservation status rank of imperiled/vulnerable. The species is relatively well known with respect to its biology and ecology. Available information is summarized in this report and differences between USA and Alberta populations are discussed. The ecology of the species renders it amenable to integration with economic activity. It can be accommodated without significant expense or impact on other natural resource uses. In some cases, forest canopy removal associated with development can be a positive factor for the species but in the past this has been an accidental byproduct of such activity. Brief strategic and operations guidelines are recommended.

Description

An overview was conducted of the butterflies of the Southern Headwaters at Risk Project (SHARP) area in extreme southwestern Alberta. The project resulted in compilation of a preliminary bibliography and a table of species known from the study area as well as those that may yet be found in the study area. Distribution and general habitat association is presented within a natural regions mapping framework. Peak flight periods are provided in summary form to aid future field surveys for target species. The SHARP area is the most productive area in the province in terms of butterfly species diversity. with 78 % of all known Alberta species known from this small comer of the province. The area is also home to 9 species that are not known from any other area of Alberta and 31 species that are considered to be species at risk. The area is therefore highly significant both provincially and nationally.
