This guide outlines the parameters of Alberta’s Potentially Serious Incident (PSI) Surveillance program, which is established under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act. The OHS Act places an obligation on the prime contractor, or if there is no prime contractor, the employer to investigate PSIs and submit these investigation reports. The guide explains how to submit a PSI investigation report, including the role of the Government of Alberta staff within the process.

The hazard assessment and control process provides a consistent approach for employers and workers to identify and control hazards in the workplace. It allows everyone to focus their efforts in the right areas, and to develop worker training, inspections, emergency response plans, etc. specific to the hazards at their work sites. Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety legislation requires employers to conduct hazard assessments, and to either eliminate the hazards identified or put controls in place to protect against them.

This publication describes the health risks associated with working in extreme heat and cold situations, and suggests reasonable solutions for workplaces. It is intended primarily for people who work outdoors in areas such as road paving, construction, forestry, agriculture, ranching, oil and gas jobs, greenhouse or horticultural work, power line maintenance, and outdoor municipal work. This guidance may also be helpful to workplaces that have hot indoor environments such as kitchens, bakeries, pizza parlours, steam presses, laundries, or dry cleaning businesses. Cold indoor workplaces include those that have walk-in freezers, meat processing, or cold storage facilities.

The guide is intended to be used as a best practices reference document for safety around conveyor systems. Section I provides definitions, a general idea of conveyor components, an overview of mechanical hazards and information about hazard assessment and reduction. Section II covers safeguards against hazards during operation and maintenance of conveyor systems, and related worker training. Appendices provide details on guard design, applicable Alberta legislation, conveyor safety checklists, inspection guidelines and an overview of conveyor-related accidents in Alberta.
