Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services recognize that community water fluoridation effectively prevents tooth decay, especially among people who are most vulnerable. It offers significant benefit with very low risk and reaches all residents who are connected to a municipal water supply. Therefore, Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services endorse community water fluoridation as a foundational public health measure to prevent tooth decay and improve oral health.

Results are subject to change based on differences in reporting schedules and updates from the various data systems. The surveillance report was replaced by the Alberta Surveillance Substance Use System in December 2020.

Description

This strategic framework is meant to guide Alberta Health Services and community agencies in their work to reduce the incidence of sexually-transmitted and blood-borne infections in the province. The main goal of the framework is to enhance the health and wellness of all Albertans by preventing, reducing the risk, minimizing the impact and diminishing the stigma of sexually-transmitted infections and blood-borne infections. It provides guiding principles for six key action areas: prevention, early detection and diagnosis, treatment, support and care, raising awareness and addressing stigma. The framework was created following discussions and work with more than 350 organizations during stakeholder engagements in the summer of 2016.

Description

Individuals diagnosed as HIV-positive and who are unable or unwilling to take appropriate steps to prevent the potential transmission of HIV to others are referred to as Unwilling/Unable (U2) individuals. This report intends to facilitate and strengthen dialogue among all stakeholder organizations to collectively address the needs of U2 individuals, support the rights and dignity of all people, and protect the population from the spread of HIV. The report sets out some of the legal tools that may be used when necessary under the Public Health Act to protect the health of others, and provides a brief summary of the criminal law and the way in which it can be used. The report ends with some recommendations for future action to better address the needs of U2 individuals while improving prevention strategies, strengthening coordination between stakeholders, and better coordinating the use of various measures including the appropriate use of legal tools when necessary.
