Description

Under the Historical Resources Act, Alberta Arts, Culture and Status of Women regulates development activities that could adversely affect significant historic resources in the province. Indigenous traditional use sites are one of the types of historic resources that the ministry records and protects through its regulatory operations. This information bulletin explains how the ministry works with Indigenous communities to gather information on traditional use sites, and how these sites are integrated into the Listing of Historic Resources in such a way as to protect them during proposed developments while also protecting the confidential nature of the sites.

Under The Government of Alberta’s Policy on Consultation with First Nations on Land and Resource Management, 2013 Alberta has created the Aboriginal Consultation Office (ACO). The ACO oversees Alberta’s role in consultation. Requirements for consultation under the Historical Resources Act (HRA) will still be managed by Alberta Culture and Status of Women. Proponents and agents may need to contact Alberta Culture and Status of Women as part of the approval processes required by the Government of Alberta prior to the onset of development activities. Alberta Culture and Status of Women is the regulatory authority for traditional use sites that are considered historic resources under the HRA.

Description

The miyo resource discusses foundational beliefs and approaches of Indigenous peoples to promote well-being and resiliency and outlines an evaluative process that honours an Indigenous worldview. This resource supports provincial implementation of the Well-Being and Resiliency Framework by outlining an evaluative framework that recognizes culturally-based practice and assesses program effectiveness and the achievement of outcomes in a meaningful way. The miyo resource was developed recognizing that western-based evaluation practices are generally not effective when working with Indigenous communities. It includes a model for service delivery and outcome and performance measurement that accurately and culturally assesses the impact and value of culturally designed services provided by and for Indigenous client populations.

These profiles provide detailed demographic and socio-economic information for Alberta's 87 provincial electoral divisions for the 2019 provincial general election. Data have been specifically tabulated from the 2016 Census of Canada. Provincial electoral divisions are territorial units represented by an elected Member to serve in the Alberta provincial legislative assembly. The provincial electoral divisions used in these information products were enacted in December 2017 and came into effect for the 2019 provincial general election.

In April 2016, Alberta's Child and Youth Advocate released an investigative review that examined the lives of seven Indigenous youth who died by suicide over an 18-month period between 2013 and 2014. All seven individuals were either receiving child intervention services when they passed away or had received services within two years of their deaths. The report made 12 recommendations for the Government of Alberta and the Ministries of Children’s Services, Health, and Education, as well as associated service delivery partners. This document provides the Government of Alberta’s response and the steps it is taking to address these recommendations.
