Welcome to Aquatic Ecosystems: The Elbow River, a field study designed for Bio 20 students. This is a curriculum-connected full-day study of the Elbow River with multidisciplinary post-activity support. The intent of this program is to provide a hands-on, engaging outdoor component, which will meet the needs of Biology 20 Unit B: Ecosystems and Population Change. This program is also written to achieve the mandate of the Alberta Government - Tourism, Parks, and Recreation and also addresses the four program goals of preservation, outdoor recreation, heritage appreciation, and heritage tourism. The field study is designed to focus on testing and studying the abiotic and biotic factors of the aquatic ecosystem. Students are challenged to predict and then discover what the factors are indicating. Students will have the opportunity to monitor the Elbow River from the pristine waters of Cobble Flats in Kananaskis Country all the way to the City of Calgary. Traveling by bus, students will...

The objectives of this project were three-fold: 1. to conduct an information and data search in order to determine the availability of information pertaining to the biophysical features of the following east slope areas, which are also referred to in this document as the study area or area of interest: · Kakwa Wildland Provincial Park, · Willmore Wilderness Park, · Sulphur Gates Provincial Recreation Area · Rock Lake – Solomon Creek Wildland Provincial Park; 2. to create a bibliography of all information sources located; and 3. to determine the types of data and extent (spatial distribution) of data available from these information sources.

Description

Chinchaga Wildland Park is one of Alberta’s newest additions to the protected areas network. The greater Chinchaga area was identified in 1995 as an Environmentally Significant Area in the Foothills Natural Region of Alberta. A portion of the area was subsequently designated as a Wildland Park in December 1999. With its current boundaries, Chinchaga Wildland Park encompasses approximately 800 km2 (80,000 hectares) of wilderness in a disjunct outlier of the Foothills Natural Region in northwest Alberta. The Chinchaga River itself forms the Park’s northern boundary, extending south to the slopes of Halverson Ridge. Elevations in the Park range from 650 m adjacent to the Chinchaga River to 915 m at the height of land atop Halverson Ridge. Located approximately 100 km west of Manning, Chinchaga Wildland Park is extremely isolated and remote. Description

This study provides a provincial-level classification of plant associations within the Alberta limber pine, whitebark pine, and alpine heath vegetation alliances, and further characterizes other high elevation treeless vegetation types. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to identify vegetation associations. Qualitative information was used from published and unpublished reports. The quantitative approach used Alberta Ecological Site Information System (ESIS) data (14 limber pine plots, 66 whitebark pine plots, and 447 treeless plots with elevation >/=2000 m) which were analyzed by via classification, ordination, and statistics. Qualitative and quantitative types were merged where they overlapped.

Sandhill habitats contain a major concentration of significant features, including numerous rare, threatened and endangered species of plants and animals. Based on recommendations from previous studies on reptiles and amphibians and rare plants in Alberta's grasslands and parkland natural regions, a broad study on sandhill habitats was undertaken in 1987. The study area encompassed all sand plains and sandhill habitats from the Red Deer River south to the United States boundary, west to highway 2 and east to the Saskatchewan border. In addition, several sites north of the Red Deer River north to the David Lake area were investigated. Research in 1987 was undertaken on rare, threatened and endangered wildlife and plants. Rare, threatened and endangered plants were studied to map their distributions, and to assess the degree to which dune stabilization was occurring and how this affected native plants.
