Description

The Historical Municipal Landfills dataset is a spatial representation of the locations of historic landfills in the province of Alberta. The data was originally captured in a 1982 survey conducted by MacLaren Plansearch Lavalin where counties within Alberta were asked to identify the quarter section that landfills were located in. MacLaren ranked the results of the survey categorizing landfill locations based on their potential risk for environmental and human health impacts. In 1985 Associated Engineering did an evaluation of a selection of sites which MacLaren had ranked as having the greatest potential risk and identified them on hardcopy aerial photographs. A subset of the remaining landfills in the MacLaren report were located on historic aerial photographs as part of an Alberta Environment and Protected Areas project where the footprint of the landfill was digitized. This data collection contains the boundaries of the planning zones within the Livingstone-Porcupine Hills area. These datasets contain polygons representing the Planning Zones (Zone 2 – Enhanced and Zone 3 – Extensive) for both areas, as well as the Watershed Analysis Units of which there are seven (7) in the Livingstone PLUZ and three (3) in the Porcupine Hills PLUZ. For more detailed information, see the Livingstone-Porcupine Hills Land Footprint Management Plan (2018) and the detailed metadata for each individual dataset.

Mountain Goat and Sheep Ranges were determined from both observations (telemetry and aerial sheep/goat surveys) and habitat suitability indexes. Goat and sheep ranges have been buffered by 800m to derive zones. Range delineation encompasses use during all seasons.To identify goat and sheep ranges in an effort to: a) avoid land use disturbances that may have a direct or indirect adverse effect on the behavior of the animals, and b) avoid permanent alteration of physical habitat conditions. An area south of Grande Prairie was added to the layer in November 2022.

The following datasets are available: Cold Lake Watercourse/Waterbody Setbacks, and Cold Lake Recreational Management Areas.

This dataset defines the ecological areas of Alberta known as the Natural Regions and Natural Subregions, as defined in 2004/2005. This dataset is intended to allow for the stratification of the province of Alberta based on ecological criteria. Natural Regions are the largest mapped ecological units in Alberta's classification system. They are defined geographically on the basis of landscape patterns, notably vegetation, soils and physiographic features. Natural Subregions are subdivisions of a Natural Region, generally characterized by vegetation, climate, elevation, and latitudinal or physiographic differences within a given Region.The intended scale of use of this product is 1:250 000. This version is 2005 Final. Linework changes from the previous Natural Subregion delineation are due both to better information and refined subregion definitions. Sub-regional plans are Alberta's approach to supporting caribou recovery through careful land-use planning which recognizes and maintains working landscapes supporting a variety of social, economic and traditional land-use. The Caribou Sub-Regional Plan Boundaries dataset contains boundaries delineating the extent of sub-regional planning areas across northern Alberta. Sub-regional planning areas include those for the approved Bistcho Lake and Cold Lake sub-regional plans, as well as the following upcoming planning areas: Upper Smoky, Wandering River, Berland, Chinchaga, Slave Lake, Wabasca, Richardson, Red Earth, and Caribou Mountains. This data collection contains various historical features within Alberta related to the Dominion Forestry Branch (DFB), and the early days of the Alberta Forest Service (AFS). The data collection consists of the following: Historical Forest Reserve Boundaries (1900 to 1930). Timber Berth boundaries (1910 to 1923). Early Ground and Aerial Fire Patrol Routes. Air Stations (1920s). Locations of DFB Forest Surveys (1910 to 1915). AFS Forest and District Boundaries (circa 1938). These datasets provide approximate locations of the features they represent and are intended for use in medium to small-scale mapping. No spatial accuracy tests were conducted on any of the data. Features derived from land locations tied in the Alberta Township System (ATS) are likely to be accurate providing there were no errors in transcribing the locations. However features digitized from old maps will have poor spatial accuracy ranging from several kilometres to a few hundred metres, depending on the map...

Alberta Environment and Parks developed an Interior habitat indicator for the province of Alberta. The indicator is the percentage area outside of a set distance from human footprint, and can be calculated for the entire province or a specific area where human footprint data are available. This dataset provides values for all Hydrologic Unit Code 8 (HUC 8) watersheds in Alberta for 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018. The distance at which an area was considered interior habitat was estimated using rounded buffers from the edges of the wall-to-wall Human Footprint Inventories produced by the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI).
