Description

Investigating stone circle sites can be notoriously difficult. This paper discusses some of the difficulties inherent with current stone circle research approaches and presents an alternative approach through the use of magnetometry and palaeobotanical analysis at three sites in south-central Saskatchewan. The paper highlights the successful use of magnetometry, the value of exploring this method for future research, and challenges to consider when using this approach.

Description

The work described within this report constitutes final mitigation of impact to the Central Area of the Cranford Site, The Cranford Site is a multi-component stone circle site located on the south bank of the Oldman River in south central Alberta, consisting of 87 rings, 5 cairns, a rock alignment, and surface and buried lithic concentrations. Excavation of 220 square metres in the Central Area of the site resulted in the recovery of 2,944 lithic artifacts, 2,772 faunal remains, and 1,165 pieces of firebroken rock, for a total of 6,881 cultural items.

Description

Between 1981 and 1986, Ethos Consultants undertook a major historic resources assessment and mitigation project for Alberta Environment, within an approximately 10 km long portion of Forty Mile Coulee which was selected for development as an irrigation storage reservoir. Analysis of the data indicates that the majority of sites examined date to the last 2,000 years and in particular to the last 400 to 500 years. Evidence is presented which suggests the majority of these sites reflect occupation by groups associated to one or more of the historic tribes comprising the Blackfoot Confederacy.

Excavations conducted at the Ross site in southeastern Alberta during 1981 yielded considerable quantities of data with scientifically significant results. These investigations were required at this high-value prehistoric stone circle site because it was to be impacted by a proposed housing subdivision in Medicine Hat. Ethos Consultants Ltd. conducted the excavation by focusing on specific objectives developed from a previous assessment program. These investigations yielded evidence of at least three prehistoric occupations, with the principal occupation dated to about 500 AD. The report suggests that the site is one of the most significant stone circle sites yet investigated in Alberta and possibly in all of the Northern Plains.
