Description

The 2016 Census showed that over one in five residents of Alberta was an immigrant. Most immigrants in the province were from Asia and most were admitted under the economic category. One in four immigrated in the five years prior to the Census and the majority of these individuals were in the core working ages of 25 to 54 years. Alberta’s share of the national total is on the rise; the province was home to about one in ten immigrants overall, but 17% of most recent arrivals to Canada.

Housing is the sixth release from the Census of Canada taken on May 10, 2016. This release explores housing characteristics of Alberta’s households such as tenure, dwelling condition and suitability. Of the provinces, Alberta saw the largest growth in households, increasing by 9.9% since the last census. Furthermore, dwellings in Alberta were newer, of better condition and more affordable, compared to the nation as a whole.

The latest release from the 2016 Census shows that almost a quarter of Albertans reported being a visible minority, up over 40% from five years earlier. The top three minority groups in Alberta were South Asian, Filipino and Chinese. Almost 85% of visible minorities lived in the cities of Edmonton and Calgary.

In August 2017 Statistics Canada released data from the 2016 census focusing on language characteristics of the Canadian population, including mother tongue, knowledge of official languages, languages most often spoken at home and other home languages. This information product from the Office of Statistics and Information analyses the data from an Alberta perspective. In Alberta, the majority of people speak English but immigrant languages, especially those from Asian countries, are becoming increasingly common. In addition, Aboriginal languages are increasingly being used in households.

In May 2017 Statistics Canada released data from the 2016 census focusing on the type of dwelling of Canadians. This information product from the Office of Statistics and Information analyses the data from an Alberta perspective. In 2016, there were 1,530,870 dwellings occupied by usual residents in Alberta. This represents a 9.9 per cent increase in the number of dwellings from the 2011 Census, the fastest growth rate among the provinces and well above the national rate of 5.6 per cent.

Description

In May 2017 Statistics Canada released data from the 2016 census focusing on age and sex characteristics of the Canadian population. This information product from the Office of Statistics and Information analyses the data from an Alberta perspective. Alberta remains the youngest province, largely due to the influx of young, working-age migrants, and slightly higher fertility than the national rate. In relation to the other provinces, Alberta had the smallest proportion of seniors, the highest share in the working ages, and registered the fastest growth of children in the country. It was also the only province where males outnumbered females.

Description

In February 2017 Statistics Canada released its first data from the 2016 census, focusing on population and dwelling counts. This information product from the Office of Statistics and Information analyses the data from an Alberta perspective. On census day (May 10, 2016), Alberta’s population count was 4,067,175. This represents an increase of 421,918 new residents, or 11.6 per cent, from the 2011 Census count. This was the province’s highest population growth rate over the past six censuses and the fourth consecutive census that Alberta had the highest population growth among the provinces.
