Description

The purpose of this Recovery Plan is to provide more detail for government ministries, municipalities, and other organizations to understand how the Government of Alberta intends to achieve the outcomes described in the Framework. This detail includes the key milestones to be achieved in this fiscal year (to March 31, 2014) and beyond. The strategic guidance is intended to both enable continued coordination of efforts and to provide the clarity required for long-term planning across GoA ministries.

The purpose of this Re-entry Guide is to provide local authorities with a series of planning considerations that should be addressed as part of their Community Emergency Management Plan. These considerations should assist communities in developing their own re-entry plans to facilitate the safe return of residents to their homes once it is deemed safe to do so. It is not intended as a substitute for a community specific plan. Each community and every disaster will present its own specific set of circumstances and pre-written plans must be adjusted against the actual situation.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of various mitigation projects, and combine the most feasible projects into water management plans for the Sheep River and Highwood River basins which suffered severe flood damages at numerous times in the past, most recently in June 2013, and assess flood mitigations for the South Saskatchewan River Basin, including the feasibility of various flood mitigation projects for the City of Medicine Hat.

Description

Bill 8, the Emergency Management Amendment Act, 2018, was introduced in the Legislature in April 2018. It includes proposed changes to the Emergency Management Act and development of a Local Authority Emergency Management Regulation (LEMR). Further debate on the bill was held over until the fall session of the Legislature to allow time to gather input from municipal emergency management stakeholders including elected officials, senior municipal administration, directors of emergency management, and law enforcement. This report back document summarizes the input received during stakeholder engagement sessions held in June 2018.

This independent review was commissioned by the Alberta Emergency Management Agency to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of its processes in supporting the delivery of disaster recovery programs. Disaster recovery programs provide disaster recovery assistance to residents, small businesses, agriculture operators and provincial and municipal governments when a disaster occurs that is considered extraordinary, when the event is widespread, and when insurance is not reasonably or readily available.

Description

The influenza pandemic outbreak experienced in 2009 was recognized as an opportunity to review Alberta’s plans and preparedness and determine what could be improved in a future response to another pandemic or other public health emergency. The Health Quality Council of Alberta (HQCA) was asked to conduct a review of the Alberta response. The review focused on the activities of Alberta Health and Wellness, Alberta Health Services and Alberta Emergency Management Agency. The review revealed many good outcomes and commendable practices from Alberta’s response to the pandemic which should continue in future responses to public health emergencies. It also identified systemic shortfalls that limited Alberta’s ability to respond effectively. The report makes 18 recommendations to address these shortfalls.

Cypress Hills Provincial Park contains many natural and cultural values that contribute to a unique ecology in the province and a diversity of attractions for park visitors. However, The current age and composition of the vegetation combined with frequent fire weather conditions create the potential for a catastrophic wildfire in the park that would put significant values at risk. This report addresses the evolution of wildfire as a historic and fundamental agent of forest and grassland renewal and evaluates the current wildfire threat to both human and ecological values. It finds that aggressive fire and forest management commitments are required to protect both human and ecological values in both the short term and long term in Cypress Hill Provincial Park, and a summary of fire and forest management strategies is presented in the conclusion of the report.
