In February 2012, Cal Dallas, Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations (IIR), directed the Ministry to develop an enhanced performance management framework. Its purpose is to improve the collection and analysis of performance information and to improve the way the Ministry uses this information both in its day-to-day operations and in reporting performance to the public. As part of the framework, a number of key outcomes were identified for each division of the Ministry, and performance measures were developed for each outcome.

This study explores the competitiveness factors and growing industry trends related to procurement decisions made when oil sands buyers award contracts to Metal Fabrication and Machinery Manufacturing (MFMM) suppliers during the development, construction and operation of mining, in-situ and upgrader projects. The study helps to provide market intelligence for the development and execution of growth strategies in areas where Alberta’s MFMM sector has a competitive advantage. It also provides a better understanding of the needs of Alberta’s oil sands industry, describes how to strengthen relationships between Alberta’s MFMM sector and oil sand project owners, and support continued economic growth in the province.

A conservation offset is a tool that enables industry to offset adverse effects of their activities and development by supporting conservation efforts on other lands. In 2009 the Government of Alberta commissioned a study to conduct an analysis of conservation offset options for Alberta. The objective of the study was to evaluate a suite of design options in terms of their ecological and economic impacts and their institutional feasibility. The purpose of the analysis is to provide a deeper understanding of the impact of different offset design options on policy goals, and demonstrate through a proof of concept how different policy options could work in a scaled-up regulated offset market.

This research was initiated by the Department of Energy, Government of Alberta and Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment Solutions in order to understand the energy, emissions and water flow patterns in the Province of Alberta through the development of Sankey diagrams. Sankey diagrams are a specific type of diagram in which the width of the arrows is proportional to the quantity of flow. A key objective of this research is developing an Alberta-specific energy forecasting and planning model for studying different greenhouse gas mitigation scenarios for the energy demand and supply sectors of the Province of Alberta.
