Description

Based on the nonlinear least squares method and nonlinear mixed-effects modeling technique, provincial and subregion-specific tree diameter prediction models were developed for major Alberta tree species. These models predict individual tree diameters at breast height from tree heights (varies by report). They can be used at both the population and plot-specific levels with varying degrees of accuracy. Different procedures for making the predictions under different circumstances are presented. Examples of model application are demonstrated based on real data.

The Department is interested in the economic feasibility of upgrading bioresources in Alberta (wood and wood wastes, wheat, canola and other crops, municipal solid waste, etc.) to useful chemicals. The report provides insight and analysis on 40 chemicals that were deemed to be of interest from a bio-production and import replacement aspect.

Crown forest management plans (FMPs) detail when, where and how timber on Alberta Crown land will be managed in order to balance social, economic and environmental needs based on input from the public, Indigenous peoples and interest groups. A component of a FMP called a timber supply analysis (TSA) was prepared by Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd. (Formerly known as Daishowa-Marubeni International Ltd.). The TSA covers PO5, P22 and S26 (Formerly PO1 and PO3) located in northern Alberta within the Upper and Lower Peace Land-use Framework planning regions; they fall within the Dry Mixedwood, Peace River Parkland, Lower Boreal Highlands and Central Mixedwood Natural Subregions.
