Description

This infographic explains the process followed for becoming a community timber program member and for applying for a community timber permit. Like commercial timber permits, the community timber permit sets terms and conditions that must be met before harvest operations can begin. Community timber permit programs allow the timber volume sold to remain focused on generating economic benefits among the local members of the Coniferous Community Timber Permit Program. For an individual to become a Community Timber Permit Program Member there must be an available vacancy that the Forestry department has justification to fill. The program vacancy will only be filled if there is available timber volume within the permit program. While this membership provides access to potential community timber permits, there are no tenure rights associated with community timber permit program membership. The Alberta Vegetation Inventory (AVI) is a standardized digital forest inventory product that is used to spatially identify the type, extent and condition of forest vegetation. The AVI is also a detailed, spatially-explicit standard to assist in the decision-making process for forest management planning, wildfire management, wildlife habitat classification, ecological classification and integrated resource management activities. The establishment of AVI standards helps ensure data quality, consistency, and compatibility with Government of Alberta forest inventory database architecture, as the responsibility to acquire AVI data is shared between forest management agreement holders and the Province.

The strategy outlines priority actions to address labour force issues and challenges experienced by the forest industry. Industry and labour groups are best positioned to implement these strategies over Government will enable and support contributing organizations with the implementation wherever appropriate. A Workforce Strategy for Alberta’s Forest Industry was developed by stakeholders from the forest industry with support from the Alberta government. Representatives from this industry participated in a series of discussions that occurred between 2007 and early 2008 and the feedback from those meetings formed this strategy.
