The proposal includes the use of steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) technology for extraction of bitumen, a bitumen processing facility with a capacity of 50,000 barrels per day (7,949 m3/d) and a production life of approximately 20 years. The location is approximately 75 kilometres northeast of Lac La Biche, Alberta in Lac La Biche County. The EIA was deemed complete in 2015. Drilling waste disposal has been regulated in Alberta since 1975. Oil and gas operators are required to show compliance with government standards by submitting disposal information for drilling waste that was disposed of on a wellsite or at a remote sump or land treatment site. This document was developed by representatives from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, drilling waste disposal consultants, the Energy Resources Conservation Board, and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development to provide guidance for assessing drilling waste disposal areas for reclamation.
