It is intended to be a guide to resource managers, industry and public having responsibility or interests in the area rather than a regulatory mechanism. Resource potentials and opportunities for development are identified with a view to assisting in the economic progress of Alberta. The plan is sufficiently flexible so that all future proposals for land use and development may be considered.

The Dunvegan study area was originally surveyed by the International Biological Program in 1970 to assess its potential for conservation. At that time, the area was recognized as two separate sites, Erinlodge and Dunvegan.
