Requires the Calgary Airport Authority and the Edmonton Regional Airports Authority to implement public health measures related to cleaning, disinfecting and physical distancing. It further requires the airport authorities to enable passenger screening of travellers returning from international locations.

Also requires the airport authorities to provide the Chief Medical Officer of Health with information upon request regarding the specific measures an airport authority is taking to implement and report on the public health measures set out in the CMOH Order 11-2020.

The program provides funding assistance to community-owned, public-use airports for their rehabilitation and construction requirements. Community airports are considered a necessary part of their community’s transportation infrastructure and provide access to communities for resource industry, medical, tourism and personal travel.

Following an Alberta-British Columbia joint premiers and ministers meeting in 2004, the ministers of transportation were asked to review their airport strategies in relation to the airport strategy of the federal government. The ministers worked with stakeholders to facilitate the development of a northern airports strategy that recognized the role of airports as economic enablers for business, freight and tourism.

Alberta Infrastructure/Transportation, in conjunction with the Alberta Aviation Strategy Action Group (ASAG), undertook a study to assess the current level of Alberta’s airports, including the assessment of all facilities, infrastructure needs and replacement costs. A total of 173 airports were initially identified for assessment, which included all registered and certified sites across Alberta excluding the Edmonton International Airport, the Calgary International Airport, and 4 Wing Cold Lake. The sites evaluated consisted of regional, community, corporate, private, and forestry aerodromes/airports.

Alberta Infrastructure/Transportation, in conjunction with the Alberta Aviation Strategy Action Group (ASAG), undertook a study to assess the current level of Alberta’s airports, including the assessment of all facilities, infrastructure needs and replacement costs. Summary profile reports were prepared for each site, based on site inspections and questionnaires. The profile reports contain contact information, organizational structure, facility detail (runways, taxiways, airfield lighting, drainage, etc.) and economic information (budgets, capital requirements, expenditures, etc.) for each airport/aerodrome. Supplemental data was also collected from the Canadian Flight Supplement (CFS) as well as other aviation sources.
