Description

In December 2016, Alberta Parks proposed to make several changes to campgrounds in the Lower Kananaskis Lake area of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. Changes proposed were designed to reduce the chance of encounters between people and bears and to increase overall camping capacity. The plan included the addition of a new camping loop to Boulton Campground, closing several sites at Lower Kananaskis Lake campground, improving bear-proof food storage at Mt. Sarrail campground, designating an official overflow camping area and designating two Preservation Zones as wildlife corridors.

This brochure provides details on the 15 designated snowshoe trails in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and the Kananaskis Valley. These trails are designated for beginner, intermediate and advanced snowshoers and are located in Simple Class 1 Terrain as defined by the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale. Snowshoers intending to venture off of these designated trails and into more complex avalanche terrain should have experience with avalanche terrain assessment and be equipped for winter backcountry travel.

William Watson Lodge is situated in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, overlooking the Lower Kananaskis Lake. When Kananaskis Country was established in 1977, the Government of Alberta announced its intention to develop selected areas within Kananaskis Country as multi-use recreation areas for all Albertans. William Watson Lodge was opened September 22, 1981 by then Premier Peter Lougheed and his wife Jeanne. Jeanne has been accredited with the idea of creating a facility for the disabled in Kananaskis Country. The Lodge has proved to be the most successful facility for persons with disabilities within the Alberta Parks system.

The plan conforms with the existing Provincial Parks Act, other related legislation and the Kananaskis Country Recreation Policy 1999. The plan will be reviewed from time to time to ensure that it remains consistent with current legislation and policy. This plan provides a statement of management intent and objectives for the area. In addition, it identifies permissible public recreation activities, related facilities and provides guidelines for their future management and development. It also recognizes existing dispositions for hydro electric power generation, as well as the desirability of maintaining viable recreation/tourism and business opportunities in the area.
