Description

This is the second technical report from the multistakeholder WaterSHED water quality monitoring program of North Saskatchewan River Basin tributaries. The report includes a summary of program operation, results from water quality sampling and flow monitoring, assessments of water quality relative to surface water quality guidelines, and quantification of mass export of several water quality parameters from tributaries across the basin. The report concludes with a review of program learnings realized during operation of the WaterSHED monitoring program and descriptions of ongoing and future work.

Surface water quality management frameworks are a key component of Alberta's cumulative effects management system. These frameworks are designed to monitor, evaluate and proactively manage the cumulative effects of human activity on ambient surface water quality in Alberta's major rivers. The frameworks do not replace existing regulatory processes, but rather add to and complement existing policies, legislation, regulations and management tools. This fact sheet provides an overview of the North Saskatchewan Region Surface Water Quality Management Framework, which includes both the North Saskatchewan and Battle rivers.

Surface water quality management frameworks are a key component of Alberta's cumulative effects management system. These frameworks are designed to monitor, evaluate and proactively manage the cumulative effects of human activity on ambient surface water quality in Alberta's major rivers. This document provides guidance for applicants of new water intake works on the North Saskatchewan River to support developments in the Industrial Heartland Designated Industrial Zone. Alberta Environment and Parks recognizes that access to water from the North Saskatchewan River for expanding industrial development in the Industrial Heartland Designated Industrial Zone is necessary to supply projected demand for water given the insufficient volumes that can be drawn from alternative sources.

This report presents the methods used to generate the web-based Condition on Environment (CoE) content published for chloride (Cl-) concentrations in the surface water of major rivers and their tributaries across Alberta. Accordingly, this report helps fulfill the responsibility of reporting to the public on the condition of Alberta's ambient environment, as required by the province's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. In particular, this report outlines the steps taken to obtain and prepare the data, assess the quality of the data and conduct spatial and temporal analyses of Cl-. The goal of this report is to neither investigate nor summarize potential Cl- sources, but rather to summarize spatial and temporal trend of Cl- concentrations in the surface waters of Alberta's major rivers and tributaries.

The report includes an historical background of the monitoring program, the technical approaches used to monitor water quality, quantity and ecosystem health of North Saskatchewan River Basin tributaries, and technical results (i.e., tables, graphs, maps) from the 2019 field season. It does not include an interpretation of results.
