Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a serious gastrointestinal disease in newborns and mainly affects premature babies or babies of low birth weight in neonatal intensive care units. It is important to understand the epidemiology of NEC in Alberta -- to determine the extent of the disease and identify any risk factors that are preventable through public health intervention. This bulletin reports on the incidence of NEC and identifies potential risk factors for NEC based on a population-based cohort of neonates admitted to Alberta neonatal intensive care units between 2006 and 2011.
