Municipal Affairs is required to prepare outcomes reports for the federal government in 2018 and 2023 describing how communities benefit from federal Canada Community-Building Fund (formerly Federal Gas Tax Fund) funding. The report also describes the impact of Canada Community-Building Fund and how local governments are improving their planning and asset management practices.

All municipalities and Metis Settlements are eligible for Canada Community-Building Fund (formerly Gas Tax Fund) funding. The program provides conditional grants for capital-related projects which meet program eligibility criteria. CCBF funding is allocated to municipalities on a per capita basis. The annual program budget is subject to Canada advising Alberta of the yearly provincial funding. Municipalities are advised of their annual CCBF funding allocations after Alberta's funding has been confirmed by Canada and specific funding allocations have been authorized by the Minister of Alberta Municipal Affairs.

Under the terms of the Gas Tax Fund Agreement, Municipal Affairs is required to prepare an Annual Expenditure Report (AER). The AER includes a narrative summarizing the results of the past year, a detailed listing of all approved projects and a summary of expended and unexpended funding provided to municipalities. The AER is approved by an auditor and submitted to Infrastructure Canada.
