Description

This document focuses on Tier 1 soil and groundwater remediation guidelines, the process used to develop them, and the manner in which they should be applied. Alberta's framework for the management of contaminated sites is designed to achieve three policy outcomes: pollution prevention, health protection, and productive use. Under this framework, three management options are provided: Tier 1, Tier 2, and Exposure Control. Tier 1 remediation guidelines are generic; that is, they are developed to protect sites at the more sensitive end of the range and can therefore be used at most sites without modification.

Species at risk are the most vulnerable components of Alberta's biodiversity. The integrity of Alberta's ecosystems is dependent on their continued presence. An effective strategy is needed to sustain these rare and threatened species. Alberta's Strategy for the Management of Species at Risk (2009-2014) provides the framework for species at risk management in this province. It provides direction for Alberta government staff involved in species at risk management. It will also be useful to Alberta citizens, particularly those involved with recovery teams, advisory committees and project partnerships.

Physical and chemical analysis of spent sand indicate that this material is very infertile. The spent sand samples analysed had an average pH of 7.2 and low Na content indicating that there was no residual problem resulting from the NaOH used in the oil production process. Freshly processed sand however does have a high pH and higher Na contents.
