This wildlife status report looks at the thick-billed longspur (formerly known as McCown’s longspur), a songbird that occurs in Alberta’s native grasslands. The thick-billed longspur is considered May Be At Risk in Alberta, and is listed as Threatened in Canada and included on Schedule 1 of the Species At Risk Act. This guide provides a standard approach in deciding black bear management responses. It is a resource for government staff who must act in situations of conflict where clear, concise and consistent direction is needed. The guide supports the province’s Black Bear Management Plan (2016) and is the result of collaboration among biologists, enforcement officers, and problem wildlife specialists. Except in national parks, this guide will apply to specific events involving black bears throughout the province, including lands within provincial parks and protected areas. The guide is reviewed annually and revised as required.

This wildlife status report provides a comprehensive summary of the prairie falcon and is intended to be useful to those managing populations of the species and its habitat. The prairie falcon is a large, pale brown raptor that occupies the arid hills and grasslands of western North America. In Alberta, the core of the species' breeding habitat is located south of Red Deer, along the Bow, Red Deer, Milk, South Saskatchewan, and Oldman rivers and their tributaries. The prairie falcon was identified as a Species of Special Concern in Alberta in 2003, mostly because of its small population size.
