Description

Groundwater in Alberta with total dissolved solids (TDS) of less than 4,000 milligrams per litre is protected under the Water Act as non saline and potentially potable water. The final report prepared by the Coal Bed Methane/Natural Gas in Coal Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Committee suggested that water with TDS greater than 4,000 milligrams per litre should be investigated for potential treatment and use. The potential value of this resource was recognized, particularly as basins in Alberta become fully allocated. In other parts of the world marginally saline or even saline water is treated and used for a variety of uses, due to the scarcity of fresh water resources. This report provides an overview of the regulations regarding groundwater use and protection in other jurisdictions and available technologies for the treatment of marginally saline water. This information is reviewed to evaluate the potential cost benefits of increasing the TDS of useable groundwater in Alberta.

Reports the results of a study to assess the importance of ecosystem goods and services (EGS) in southern Alberta. The EGS assessment will provide important background information in support of developing the Southern Alberta Landscapes regional strategy and will identify areas of further investigation and study regarding the importance of EGS in southern Alberta. The Phase 1 report summarizes the responses of more than 165 organizations and individuals thought to be addressing issues important to ecosystems in southern Alberta. Also includes an annotated bibliography of information relevant to EGS and highlights areas where information is currently lacking.

The Accommodation Standards will direct operators of supportive living facilities in the delivery of quality accommodation services to residents. The Accommodation Standards are based on the input provided to the MLA Task Force on Continuing Care Health Service and Accommodation Standards in 2005.
