Social isolation is a silent reality experienced by many seniors, and particularly LGBTQ seniors. This resource is intended to heighten awareness and sensitivity and help organizations, friends, family members, and communities address the particular social needs of these seniors. This resource is meant to supplement the two volume set Social Isolation of Seniors previously developed by the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Ministers Responsible for Seniors.

Cosmetic renovations are not eligible for funding under this program.

On May 27, 2014, the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Seniors Coordinating Council received the Age-Friendly Alberta Recognition Award for their commitment to becoming an Age-Friendly Edmonton. Edmonton is the first city in Alberta, and fourth city in Canada, to join the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities.

Description

Strathcona County’s Social Sustainability Framework identified the need for a seniors plan to prepare for shifting demographics. In response, the County developed the Older Adults Plan, approved by Council on June 30, 2009. The plan uses the community’s strength as a base for building an age-friendly and caring community that values and supports its older residents. The plan promotes aging well, with independence, by providing the right programs, services and supports to meet the needs of older adults. On June 6, 2013, Strathcona County was the first community to receive the Age-Friendly Alberta Recognition Award.
