The study helps to provide market intelligence for the development and execution of growth strategies in areas where Alberta’s MFMM sector has a competitive advantage. It also provides a better understanding of the needs of Alberta’s oil sands industry, describes how to strengthen relationships between Alberta’s MFMM sector and oil sand project owners, and support continued economic growth in the province.

A conservation offset is a tool that enables industry to offset adverse effects of their activities and development by supporting conservation efforts on other lands. In 2009 the Government of Alberta commissioned a study to conduct an analysis of conservation offset options for Alberta. The objective of the study was to evaluate a suite of design options in terms of their ecological and economic impacts and their institutional feasibility. The purpose of the analysis is to provide a deeper understanding of the impact of different offset design options on policy goals, and demonstrate through a proof of concept how different policy options could work in a scaled-up regulated offset market.

A conservation offset is a tool that enables industry to offset adverse effects of their activities and development by supporting conservation efforts on other lands. In 2009 the Government of Alberta commissioned a study to conduct an analysis of conservation offset options for Alberta. The objective of the study was to evaluate a suite of design options in terms of their ecological and economic impacts and their institutional feasibility. The purpose of the analysis is to provide a deeper understanding of the impact of different offset design options on policy goals, and demonstrate through a proof of concept how different policy options could work in a scaled-up regulated offset market. This report summarizes research on offset policy options carried out under the project.

The North Saskatchewan Regional Advisory Council was appointed by Cabinet to provide strategic advice in the development of the North Saskatchewan Regional Plan. In its advice submitted to the government in December 2014, the council provided 69 recommendations in six topic areas: managing wetlands and lakes as part of watershed management; supporting biodiversity in the region; inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in land-use planning; community growth and community land-use planning; management of outdoor recreation; and economic development.

Like commercial timber permits, the community timber permit sets terms and conditions that must be met before harvest operations can begin. Community timber permit programs allow the timber volume sold to remain focused on generating economic benefits among the local members of the Coniferous Community Timber Permit Program. For an individual to become a Community Timber Permit Program Member there must be an available vacancy that the Forestry department has justification to fill. The program vacancy will only be filled if there is available timber volume within the permit program. While this membership provides access to potential community timber permits, there are no tenure rights associated with community timber permit program membership.
