Commonly referred to as Alberta Vegetation Inventory Version 1, these forest inventory specifications were developed after field testing the original White Area forest inventory photo interpretation procedures, and after discussion among branches in the Land Information Services Division and other divisions in the department of Forestry, Lands and Wildlife.

Description

These forest inventory specifications were developed and field tested in 1987. The main purpose of the inventory was to provide reliable volume estimates and location of the aspen timber resources within the White Area of the province. This document provides an overview of and rationale for the development of the inventory, and establishes procedures and guidelines for the interpretation of aerial photography that could be used to develop the inventory.

The Alberta Vegetation Inventory Standards Manual has been developed to support the collection of detailed vegetation information, which is necessary for Forest Management Agreement holders and the government department responsible for forestry matters to provide the best possible forest management plans, wildlife habitat classifications and integrated resource management plans. Major changes in Version 2.1 of the manual include dropping references to "productive" and "non-productive" forest land, changing the term "Site Index" to "Timber Productivity Rating", adding additional Field Check types, dropping "Photo Interpretation and Base Map Procedures and Specifications" as well as "Standards" (audit) from the manual.

Description

Detailed vegetation information is necessary for Forest Management Agreement holders and the government department responsible for forestry matters to provide the best possible forest management plans, wildlife habitat classifications and integrated resource management plans. In November 1990, the Vegetation Information Steering Committee agreed to an enhanced version of the Alberta Vegetation Inventory (AVI) specifications as the minimum standard for inventorying accessible forest lands. This new inventory standard was referred to as the Collective Vegetation Inventory (CVI). This manual provides the background, procedures and specifications associated with implementing an ongoing vegetation inventory as the first truly integrated approach to the mapping of Alberta's vegetation information.

Description

Integrated resource plans (IRPs) provide direction for managing Alberta's public land and resources. When IRPs are developed, information on resources and activities is gathered and the views of interested government departments, municipal authorities, interest groups and the general public are considered. After it has been approved by the Economic Planning Cabinet Committee, an IRP is implemented by government agencies and the private sector. IRPs are flexible. As new information becomes available or situations change, revisions or plan amendments can be made to an approved plan.
