Description

The draft concept plan provides background information and outlines the management and development intents for the proposed Saskatoon Mountain Provincial Recreation Area. It proposes that recreational trail use, both motorized and non-motorized, be offered, and that the current hunting regime continue with the addition of hunters requiring a firearms discharge permit. Proposed facility development includes designated OHV trails, non-motorized multi-use trails for activities such as hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, a campground and an upgraded day-use area. The plan also recognizes the conservation values of the site and proposes to protect the areas of highest conservation value.

The Lepidoptera of the area was studied on 13 different days (30 trap nights) from June 27 to August 15 in the years 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. All collected specimens were databased and information on most is available on the Virtual Museum website of the University of Alberta Strickland Museum (http://www.entomology.ualberta.ca/). No collections were made in the spring or fall and thus many species remain to be documented.

Description

Tolman Bridge, is located in the valley of the Red Deer River, 18 km (10 miles) east of the town of Trochu. The bridge and adjoining Park land are in the north half of section 14, range 22, township 34, west of the Fourth Meridian. The coordinates at the bridge are 51.503N and 113.009W. The elevation ranges from around 600 m at the river to 800 m or so near the top of the river breaks. In a Natural Area Inspection Report dated 25 June 1982 and in the 1989 Trochu 82 P/14, 1:50,000 topographic map, the land southwest of the bridge was designated as the “Tolman Bridge Municipal Park” while that southeast of the bridge was referred to as the “Tolman Bridge Recreation Area”. In an Alberta, Department of the Environment, Parks and Protected Areas Division paper dated 9 May 2000, the areas on both sides of the river are included in “Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park”. Campgrounds are found in both areas and they are patrolled by a Conservation Officer stationed in Drumheller.

The purpose of the project Learning a Language, Learning the Land was to pilot an educational process with immigrant newcomers that combined language learning and environmental literacy in an outdoor park setting. This report is an evaluation of the joint project between the primary partners - Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation (Parks Division, Learning and Stewardship Services – herein called Alberta Parks), Edmonton Mennonite Centre for New Comers (EMCN, English Language Program) and the City of Edmonton (Natural Areas Conservation – herein called Edmonton Parks). The project was initially funded by the Edmonton Community Adult Learning Association (ECALA) with additional funding provided by the Government of Alberta, City of Edmonton, Edmonton Centre for Newcomers, and Mountain Equipment Co-op. This plan will be used by park staff and will also be available for use by other public agencies and individuals such as volunteers, leaseholders, members of special interest groups, and members of the public who have an interest in the management of Cypress Hills Provincial Park. It will also provide information that will assist in preparing annual operating plans and budgets.

Cypress Hills Provincial Park contains many natural and cultural values that contribute to a unique ecology in the province and a diversity of attractions for park visitors. However, The current age and composition of the vegetation combined with frequent fire weather conditions create the potential for a catastrophic wildfire in the park that would put significant values at risk. This report addresses the evolution of wildfire as a historic and fundamental agent of forest and grassland renewal and evaluates the current wildfire threat to both human and ecological values. It finds that aggressive fire and forest management commitments are required to protect both human and ecological values in both the short term and long term in Cypress Hill Provincial Park, and a summary of fire and forest management strategies is presented in the conclusion of the report.
