The paper is meant to be a starting point for conversations about the role of the nonprofit/voluntary sector in Alberta, and examines the relationship between government and sector, now and in the future.

On February 24 and 25, nearly 400 community leaders from across Alberta gathered in Red Deer at a unique event called Culture Forum 2012. Those invited represented a wide spectrum of cultural interests from Alberta's arts, heritage and museums, multicultural, nonprofit/voluntary, recreation, creative industries, corporate communities and youth representatives. The goal of the forum was to find innovative solutions to common challenges while capitalizing on opportunities to build a sustainable culture sector. The result was a series of strategies to address challenges frequently faced by individuals and organizations striving to make Alberta’s culture sector healthy and sustainable. The forum built on regional dialogues held with both the nonprofit/voluntary sector and arts sector in communities across Alberta in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Between December 16, 2009 and February 26, 2010, the Honourable Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit engaged in a dialogue with the nonprofit/voluntary sector. Six regional dialogue meetings were conducted in Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton. An online dialogue was hosted on the Culture and Community Spirit website to enable access to individuals who wished to have input but were not able to participate in the regional dialogues. The purpose of the dialogue was to identify challenges and opportunities for government and the sector to work better together to help support healthy and vibrant communities.
