Description

The work described within this report constitutes final mitigation of impact to the Central Area of the Cranford Site, The Cranford Site is a multi-component stone circle site located on the south bank of the Oldman River in south central Alberta, consisting of 87 rings, 5 cairns, a rock alignment, and surface and buried lithic concentrations. Excavation of 220 square metres in the Central Area of the site resulted in the recovery of 2,944 lithic artifacts, 2,772 faunal remains, and 1,165 pieces of firebroken rock, for a total of 6,881 cultural items.

Description

In 1980, the Archaeological Survey of Alberta conducted a brief test excavation programme at the Ross site, D1Pd-3, situated on a terrace on the south side of the Oldman River near Coaldale. The excavations were undertaken to determine if the site was sufficiently intact to warrant designation as a Provincial Historical Resource. Two 2 x 2 units were excavated to about 3.5 m below surface; both yielded extensive cultural remains. At least eight intact components were noted, while a ninth component was defined as a flood deposit. All are assigned to the Old Women's Phase of the Late Prehistoric Period. The components represent camping activities from a variety of seasonal occupations. As a result of the project, the Ross site was designated a Provincial Historical Resource in 1981, and the riverbank was stabilized by Alberta Environment.

This annotated bibliography includes papers, short notes, theses, conference abstracts and maps published between 1950-1988. The citations deal with surficial geology, glacial history, palaeontology and palaeoenvironments in the Western Corridor of Alberta between roughly 30,000 to 6,000 years BP. The bibliography includes about 650 citations. It was compiled primarily as a research aid for archaeologists and others involved in the Archaeological Survey of Alberta's "First Albertans" project - an investigation into the initial peopling of Alberta.

Between 1981 and 1986, Ethos Consultants undertook a major historic resources assessment and mitigation project for Alberta Environment, within an approximately 10 km long portion of Forty Mile Coulee which was selected for development as an irrigation storage reservoir. Analysis of the data indicates that the majority of sites examined date to the last 2,000 years and in particular to the last 400 to 500 years. Evidence is presented which suggests the majority of these sites reflect occupation by groups associated to one or more of the historic tribes comprising the Blackfoot Confederacy.
