Description

Between December 16, 2009, and February 26, 2010, the Honourable Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit engaged in a dialogue with the arts sector in Alberta. Six regional dialogue meetings were conducted in Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton. An online dialogue was hosted on the Culture and Community Spirit website to enable access to individuals who wished to have input but were not able to participate in the regional dialogues. The purpose of the dialogue was to identify challenges and opportunities for government and the sector to work better together to help support healthy and vibrant communities.

The Turner Valley gas plant site, used for many decades for petroleum production and refining, was decommissioned after 1985 and was designated as a historic site in 1995. The conservation planning presented in this report has been developed to mesh conservation priorities determined in the assessment of the buildings and equipment, together with the interpretive strategy. The plan establishes two distinct components for the site: a self-guided component, and a guided walking tour.

The Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) has been established to assist in fostering the unique characteristics of Alberta’s many communities. To accomplish this, the program has been designed to respond to local facility enhancement needs and to work in partnership with community groups and volunteers. By assisting communities with construction, renovation or redevelopment of community public-use facilities the Community Facility Enhancement Program will help enhance the quality of life and citizen well-being in communities across the province. Funded by the Government of Alberta through the Alberta Lottery Fund in order to build strong communities and enhance the quality of life for Albertans.

In February of 2009, Alberta Culture and Community Spirit undertook a strategic overview of cultural facilities across the province in order to ascertain the state of activity in cultural facilities planning, and to identify current trends and projects in development. To supplement this work, the Honourable Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit, hosted a series of regional dialogues in June 2009 aimed at gathering information, understanding diverse perspectives and identifying community needs related to cultural infrastructure. Results from the dialogues will assist the department in developing a comprehensive plan for maintaining existing inventory in the province, while deploying resources for new facilities in a visionary and innovative fashion. A total of 162 individuals attended six dialogues, held in various regions of the province.
