Foxtail barley is a tough-to-control perennial weed in zero tillage systems. Herbicides containing glyphosate can effectively control seedlings at relatively low rates with much higher rates required for control of mature plants. Cultural practices that encourage a competitive crop, such as high seeding rates and banding of nitrogen fertilizer, help to reduce yield losses and slow the spread of foxtail barley.

Weed management in tree nurseries should consist of cultural/preventative measures and should be supplemented by the effective use of appropriate herbicides. Since weeds reduce the growth and quality of nursery plants by competing for nutrients, water and light, nursery growers must plan an effective weed control program. This fact sheet will review preventative measures and list registered herbicides for planning a weed control program in tree nurseries. Information about herbicide selectivity, soil versus foliar activity and steps for planning a weed control program with herbicides is also included.

Dugouts provide water for a variety of purposes. They can be used as a source for domestic (household) water supplies, livestock watering, as well as raising fish for enjoyment or profit. If the dugout is constructed properly and in a suitable location, very little maintenance is required. If algae, vegetation or suspended solids become problems, then control can be either chemical (copper sulphate, diquat, aluminum sulphate, etc.), mechanical (uprooting weeds with chains) or biological (grass carp). Care must be taken in dugouts used for fish culture, as some of the chemical applications are directly toxic to the fish or result in decomposing plants that ultimately deplete the oxygen needed by the fish.
