This progress report outlines the activities undertaken by the Chief Scientist of Alberta Environment and Parks over the inaugural appointment of this position. Highlights include: building a strategic knowledge network with the broader scientific community; seeking ways to braid Indigenous Knowledge in Alberta’s environmental science program; supporting a strong science culture within the department; brokering scientific reviews by external experts to address environmental concerns or issues; reporting on the condition of Alberta’s environment; and improving availability and accessibility of scientific evidence to inform decision-making processes.

Results of the moose aerial population count surveys for the 2018 hunting season in Alberta. The surveys were conducted in Wildlife Management Unit 320. The primary objectives of this survey were to assess the status of moose populations by determining a population estimate based on density estimates, and a population demographic split for sex and age classes. The secondary objectives of this survey were to assess the status of white-tailed deer, mule deer and elk populations in WMU 320 by determining a population estimate based on density estimates, and a population demographic split for sex and age classes.

Stone production debris (debitage) is the most common artifact type found at archaeological sites in North America. A significant time investment is required to catalogue debitage from large assemblages. Conventional thought holds that, because lithic tool manufacture is reductive, the attributes of flake size and cortex amount will decrease throughout production while dorsal flake scars increase. Dorsal scar count is an attribute commonly used to infer trends in an assemblage; however, the statistical significance of dorsal scars as a measure of the stage of lithic tool production has not been addressed adequately. Cortex amount is also used to deduce lithic reduction stages; however, the author argues that this may not represent behavioral patterns as meaningfully as platform morphology.

Description

The Vertical Series type of Indigenous rock art is found at only a handful of sites across the northern Great Plains. Discovery of a new site is therefore significant. In 2012 the Glenwood Erratic in southwestern Alberta was reported as a heavily vandalized rock art site. Inspection, however, revealed no rock art where originally specified. Instead, previously unknown rock art was found on many surfaces of the erratic, all of which is faint and challenging to describe. The age of the artwork is estimated at between 500 to 1,000 years before present. The identity of the cultural group responsible is unknown.

Description

A rare lichen survey was conducted in selected areas of Pigeon Lake Provincial Park (PLPP) from October 14 to 18, 2008. The main objective of the survey was to document the occurrence of rare lichens and mitigate possible damage as a result of infrastructure upgrade activities, including the expansion of old camp stalls, creation of new camp stalls, shower buildings, a new boat launch and some additional tree and shrub clearings. The park is located approximately 25 km west of Wetaskiwin, Alberta and is accessed by Hwy 13. It falls within the Central Parkland, a subregion of the Parkland Natural Region of Alberta, characterized by aspen (Populus tremuloides) and balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera) stands (Kershaw et al. 2001). These stands form the main vegetation community of PLPP (Kershaw et al. 2001) and are typically known for not supporting high lichen numbers as it is often too dry.

This soil survey updates a portion of the reconnaissance survey, Wainwright and Vermilion sheets. The new survey benefits from more intensive investigation of soils in the field, use of recent, good quality aerial photographs and improved map presentation. The soil map consists of 53 individual sheets that are prepared from aerial photographs. The first section of the report outlines cultural and historic features of the county. This is followed by discussions on physical features of the area and their relationship to soils. The final portion of the report outlines soil survey interpretations for agriculture and engineering.

The soil map included with the report shows the location and extent of the different soil areas and indicates the main topographic features. The soil rating map indicates the better land from the poorer land and serves as a guide to future agricultural development.
